Signs, causes and preventing blockages
Signs
A bad smell coming from the plughole or a gurgling sound when water is draining is often the first warning. The problem will really become clear, though, when water starts draining very slowly, if at all. Once you do know something’s wrong, it’s important you seek help immediately, as a blocked sink might be a sign of a bigger problem.
Causes
In a kitchen sink it tends to be scraps of food and the build-up of cooking fats tipped down the sink that are the problem. In the bathroom it’s generally hair and soap scum. In both locations, any foreign objects, such as bottle tops, jewelry and washers, dropped down the plughole may cause a blockage.
Preventions
Remembering a few simple rules could save you a lot of hassle, and unpleasant smells, in the future. Always remove bits of food from the sink rather than washing them down the plughole. Try not to pour fat and grease down the sink. If you really have no choice, then wash them down with plenty of hot water and detergent. Remove hair from the plugholes whenever you have a bath or shower. Finally, it’s a very good idea to install traps which will catch food scraps and hair for you.
